Membership Application

Apply to join the British Lavender Growers Association.

Membership is open to all involved in the British lavender industry — growers, distillers, agronomists, colleges, packers, processors, and allied industries. One standard. Six categories. A single online application below.

Member Categories

Six categories. One British Standard.

Every member, regardless of category, signs up to the same biosecurity baseline and Farm-to-Bottle transparency. The category reflects what you do — not the rigour required.

Growers

Farm owners, smallholders, and tenant farmers cultivating Lavandula angustifolia, x intermedia, or speciality cultivars under the British Standard biosecurity baseline.

  • Maintain field records to BLGA cultivation protocols
  • Permit annual provenance & soil-health audit
  • Report notifiable disease via the BLGA register

Distillers

On-site or contract steam-distillation operators producing essential oil and hydrosol. Distillers may apply independently or alongside a grower membership.

  • Operate to the BLGA Distillation SOP
  • Submit one GC-MS oil panel per season for purity verification
  • Disclose still capacity, condenser type, and fractioning method

Agronomists & Consultants

Independent advisors supporting member farms on soil chemistry, IPM, irrigation, and harvest planning. Listed in the directory with verified specialisms.

  • Hold relevant BASIS / FACTS or equivalent accreditation
  • Adhere to the BLGA Advisor Code of Conduct
  • Annual CPD declaration

Packers, Processors & Marketing

Companies handling dried bud, sachets, finished oils, or branded retail product derived from member farms.

  • Farm-to-Bottle traceability documentation
  • British Quality Mark licensing (where used on pack)
  • Annual chain-of-custody declaration

Colleges & Research

Agricultural colleges, university horticulture departments, and research stations contributing to varietal trials and cultivation science.

  • Share anonymised trial outcomes with the standards committee
  • Host one member field-day per academic year (where practical)

Allied Industries

Suppliers of nursery stock, harvest machinery, distillation equipment, packaging, and laboratory services to the British lavender industry.

  • Disclose any conflicts of interest at AGM
  • Subject to member-feedback review every two years

Member Benefit · Supply Chain Security

Exclusive access to virus-free propagation material.

With the closure of the UK's traditional specialist nurseries, propagation material is no longer a transactional purchase — it is a managed national resource. Members access cleared stock and collective bargaining with Europe's remaining top-tier wholesale nurseries through the secretariat.

Virus-free propagation

Cuttings raised by Association-cleared propagators against the Genetic Registry sourcing protocol — released only to members, against verified destination fields.

Collective bargaining

Pre-negotiated terms with Europe's remaining top-tier wholesale nurseries. Members order against the BLGA framework agreement, not on the open market.

Closed-loop registry

Every plot, batch, and cultivar is logged in the Genetic Registry on planting — closing the provenance loop and protecting the British crop from informal stock movement.

Member-Only White Paper · Preview

Post-Downderry: The New UK Supply Landscape.

A frank assessment of where British growers now source elite cultivar stock — the surviving European propagators, the Association's collective framework agreements, and the new role of the Genetic Registry in protecting national supply.
